Fortunatæ es un ensayo audiovisual perfomativo, concebido durante la Global Slavery History Fellowship - y construido a través de colaboraciones con el International Institute of Social History, el Rijksmuseum, el Amsterdam Museum, el Allard Pierson Museum, el Stadsarchief Amsterdam y la Universidad de Ámsterdam -. Fortunatæ traza una red de agentes internacionales vinculados a la historia de la esclavitud en Canarias, poniendo el foco en el papel de los Países Bajos, mientras explora nuevas formas de narrar el pasado. La pieza entrelaza obras de arte, material de archivo y otros documentos históricos en un dispositivo híbrido entre el cine de ensayo y la performance. La capa oral, que existe únicamente en la presentación en vivo, se transforma en una capa textual para su versión audiovisual.
Este ensayo audiovisual performativo explora formas artísticas vinculadas con la mediumnidad, con el fin de ofrecer una corporalidad simbólica a las personas esclavizadas en Canarias, excluidas de la construcción del archivo.
Desde octubre de 2026 hasta el 24 de enero de 2027, Fortunatæ abre la exposición Mientras seamos salvajes en el TEA Tenerife Espacio de las Artes. Además, Javier Estupiñán se encargó de presentar la versión performativa como acto de inauguración de la muestra. La exposición explora la oposición histórica entre civilización y barbarie. Reúne diferentes momentos históricos y geografías conectados por la expansión colonial europea, mientras enmarca a Canarias como uno de los primeros laboratorios de la modernidad colonial y como un territorio históricamente conectado con Europa, África, el Caribe y América Latina.
Fortunatæ is a performative audiovisual essay conceived during the Global Slavery History Fellowship - and built through collaborations with the International Institute of Social History, the Rijksmuseum, the Amsterdam Museum, the Allard Pierson Museum, the Stadsarchief Amsterdam, and the University of Amsterdam -. Fortunatæ traces a network of international agents linked to the history of slavery in the Canary Islands, focusing on the role of the Netherlands while exploring new ways of narrating the past. The piece weaves together artworks, archival materials, and other historical documents in a hybrid device between essay film and performance. Its oral layer, which exists only in live presentation, becomes a textual layer for the audiovisual version.
This performative audiovisual essay explores artistic forms linked to mediumship, in order to offer a symbolic corporeality to the enslaved people of the Canary Islands, excluded from the construction of the archive.
From October 2026 until January 24, 2027, Fortunatæ opens the exhibition Mientras seamos salvajes (While We Are Savage) at TEA Tenerife Arts Space. Additionally, Javier Estupiñán was in charge of presenting the performative version as the opening act of the exhibition. The exhibition explores the historical opposition between civilization and savagery. It brings together different historical moments and geographies connected by European colonial expansion, while framing the Canary Islands as one of the early laboratories of colonial modernity and as a territory historically connected to Africa, Europe, the Caribbean, and Latin America.
